About our Club Membership

Some years ago it became clear to the GAA Club that the population in Claregalway and the surrounding areas was set to increase significantly. The club knew that their home in Lakeview had very limited chance for expansion and that without some new development the club would struggle to offer opportunities to all who might want to join the club.
At that time it would have been much easier for those involved to keep their heads down, stay busy with the day to day running of the club and ignore the issue, instead brave decisions we made to grow and to embrace the future. These decisions were made in the full knowledge that it would mean years of hard work for those involved to source, build and fund any new development.

An area of farmland in Knockdoemore was purchase and the development started.
Today that area consists of three full-size pitches, a clubhouse, a walking/jogging pathways with street lights, a fantastic floodlights near all-weather pitch, and it’s now home not just to the GAA club, but also to several other groups, Foróige, the Athletics club, the Brownies, and the Comhaltas groups, among others, now all enjoy benefit of having a based in our community.

It’s in the juvenile section of our GAA club where the foresight of those brave decisions is most visible, as today there are between 700 – 800 boys and girls playing the game at the various juvenile age grades in the club form Under 6 upwards. It would be impossible to cater for all these children without the Knockdoemore complex. Today we have the largest GAA club membership in Connacht, and all our children are welcomed into the club, to learn, to grow, to make new friends, to keep fit and active, to be part of a thriving active community, and to play the game we all love.

Those who were brave enough to make those initial expansion plans also raised significant funds to pay for it, however, a development as large as this needs bank loans and these loans need to have a regular stream of significant funds to repay them. The club considers long and hard how to structure this, and in the end, decided on a two-pronged approach.

Firstly those within the club undertook the responsibility to develop and run fundraising events, Teenage disco, Strictly Come Dancing, the football camps for the kids etc. etc. are all significant contributors to the loans. These take significant work by all those involved and the club is extremely grateful to all our fundraisers.
The second prong is to simply and directly ask all our members, those people who now benefit from the investment in Knockdomore to help us pay for it, and this is why the Club membership and Development charges are set at their current rates

The club appreciates that these rates may appear higher than some may expect, however, we feel that overall this is the fairest and most equitable way to spread the onerous task of paying for the wonderful facilities that we now all enjoy.
Furthermore, the club is committed to offering all our players at every age level, a very rewarding and enjoyable experience in the club. It’s our firm ambition that all our members will thoroughly enjoy their time with us, and get very real value for the membership contribution
