Club News May 2019

Senior Mens Update:

Alan Moran remains in charge for the 2019 season after taking charge mid-2018. Darran Hennessy has been appointed captain and the panel has been boosted with the return of Conor Costello returning from a number of years in Australia as well as Dara Whelan, Dylan Buckley and Jason O’Reilly from last year’s Minor panel which fell short in the County Final. Mark Goldrick is currently on the injury list while Conor Kelly is unavailable. The team have played 5 league games to date, picking up 2 draws (Oughterard & Kilconly), 2 wins ( Cortoon & St. James’) while the only blotch on the copybook has been a defeat to Moycullen. The draw for the championship was held on Monday, February 25th and Claregalway have been drawn in the so called group of death which reads as below:

LeagueTableThere is 1 further round of league fixtures to play ( Claregalway v Oranmore Weekend of May 11th/12) before a 2 week break before the opening round of the championship v local rivals Annaghdown. The team currently have a number of players involved with the Galway U20 set up as well as Danny Cummins who is with the Galway Seniors. Panel members Conor Campbell and Dylan Buckley were part of the NUIG Fresher team which achieved All Ireland A Fresher success earlier this year with Campbell being voted NUIG player of the campaign. .

The Junior A side have played 3 league games to date with 2 draws (An Ceathru Rua and Na Piarsaigh) sandwiched either side of a commanding victory over St James’. This team is fortunate to call on the experience of Brian Loughlin, Conor Glynn, Simon Monaghan and Martin Kelly to name a few, while the likes of Iarla Keating, Shane Moylan, Brian Callinan and Damo Dolan give the side its more youthful dimension. Daryl O’Brien who transferred to the club this season has caught the eye and manager Jerry O’Sullivan will be looking to enjoy a fruitful season at the helm. The team made it the West Board Championship Semi Final last year and with a bit of luck could go a step further this year.

The Junior B side have played 1 league game defeating Milltown with further league games v Annaghdown and Corofin to come before the championship gets under way. This team is blessed to contain the likes of Fergal McEvoy and Paul McGuinness and with their talent and experience, the sky is the limit for this outfit.

The Minors have struggled thus far to date and currently reside bottom of their league table. They will look to rectify this post leaving cert when the championship kicks off.

The U20 club championship will take place towards the tail end of the year. Claregalway will look to go 1 step further this year as they were pipped by Mountbellew in the North Board Final in Tuam Stadium 2018.
